Tarsier: Learn Tagalog
iOS Language Learning Game
“A Tagalog learning app built around how the language actually works. Lessons cover root words, affixes, and the Taglish you’d actually hear in everyday conversation.”
- Wrote the curriculum: 177 lessons, 9 chapters, 3,700+ quiz cards across 11 quiz types, and a 329-entry dictionary
- Researched the etymology behind each root word and fact checked it against the Tagalog I grew up speaking
- Works fully offline, with 310 lesson images and 1,983 pronunciation clips built through a Google Cloud TTS pipeline
- Built in SwiftUI on Swift 6 with strict concurrency, targeting iOS 17+, with SwiftData tracking progress
- Custom practice engine rebuilds every session from your weak, due, and recent cards instead of replaying a fixed queue
- Energy, streaks, and daily XP goals, a 28-screen onboarding with a placement test, and an Insights tab with a streak heatmap and accuracy breakdowns
- Subscriptions and paywalls through Superwall and RevenueCat, with AdMob rewarded ads for free users
- Wrote around 28 Python validators that audit lesson content, audio, and image coverage before every release
- Drew the tarsier mascot and custom icons (the ube, the Philippine flag) in Affinity Designer, and all promotional material in Affinity Photo
- Shipped on the App Store across 9 releases, currently v1.3
